WEDDING NIGHT
1 SEA VIEW TERRACE
“VILE owner! Choose somewhere else to stay...”
We regularly visit St Ives, and some friends of ours recommended this place to us ... how wrong they were!

I can't comment on the accomodation, cleanliness or breakfast! Sadly, we only encountered the VILE owner of One Sea View Terrace, when he, what can only be described as "ripped us off". We booked One Sea View Terrace several months ahead of our booking, sent a cheque in full [yes, stupid, I know], which was promptly cashed. We needed to cancel our booking, and I spoke to Gerald, and confirmed our conversation on e-mail. He had agreed that he would refund our money, as our booking was over a bank holiday weekend, and when we cancelled he still had six weeks to fill the room. He later refuted this and kept our money, and insisted it was our fault "for messing him about".

St Ives is a beautiful village, with some fab places to stay. Choose one of the many nice places, with nice owners and have a lovely holiday. Don't let this man cause you the upset he caused us.

“£100 a night?????”
Recently returned from a weekend break in the beautiful St Ives. Wish i could say the same for the hovel in which we stayed.
We were recomended One Sea View by friends who stayed there 2 years ago, unfortunately the B&B now has a new owner and has fallen into the hands of the "delightful" Gerald. I don't know what the world has ever done to this man but he is clearly very bitter about soemthing.

“Stay at 11 instead!”
We usually stay at 11 Sea View Terrace (beautiful B&B) but as Graham the owner was away on holiday he referred us to number 1 Sea View Terrace - ran by Gerald and his wife.
Our problems all started when my Grandmother died and we tried to bring our reservation forward a week.
14 days before our arrival we asked politely by e-mail if we could book the weekend before if there were rooms available and if there were no rooms, please could we have our 25% (£70) deposit back. (no cancellation policy or refund policy on website or confirmation e-mail). Gerlad replied with a very blunt and quite frankly rude e-mail saying he had no rooms and he's keeping the deposit.
I then him to inform Gerald the reasons we were having to change the reservation and hoped for a bit of humanity from him to try and get our money back but just ended up bemused and angry with this horrible man's attitude.
He then made up that i said i was going to "[--] him up" when i was next in St Ives and he wasn't going to let Graham at number 11 use his parking space anymore unless i apoligised.
Utterly confused as how such a nasty piece of work has been given a licence to run a guest house.

To cut a ong story short... don't stay with the horribe northern bloke and stay at 11 Sea View Terrace instead. Graham is a Gentleman and Gerald should really be learning a thing or 2 from him.

“Rude owner”
I have just been e-mailing Gerald at One Sea View Terrace about accommodation next March. I requested certain dates and was told they were full. I changed our dates and also asked if it was full because of Easter holidays. The reply was "Tough" . Nothing else. I feel this was very rude and I really don't want to stay there now. Strange it got good reviews. Maybe Gerald was having a bad day, but you can't afford bad days in hospitality.
11 SEA VIEW TERRACE
“Really worth staying at 11 Sea View Terrace”
Beautiful, the interior is of a very high standard. Relaxing, quiet with lovely views of the sea. Graham the owner is charming and attentive, and his breakfast was yummy! We would definitely recommend.

“Believe the hype - it's fabulous”
We stayed for four nights and were delighted with our choice. Because we booked late we ended up staying in both the first and second floor suites. Each has fabulous views overlooking the sea. The rooms are even better than the photos would suggest. Each sea view room is very large and luxurious and, like the rest of the house, immaculate. Graham was an excellent host throughout, even providing thoughtful touches like umbrellas at the front door if you get caught out. The breakfast was a real treat with an impressive array of cooked and continental options. As first time visitors to St Ives, we had not appreciated how difficult it is to park in the town. We were lucky that 11 Sea View Terrace has its own parking. Highly recommended.

“This must be the most tasteful B&B in all of Cornwall!”
We were lucky enough to stay with Graham as part of our 6 week European Holiday. Our English cousins joined us for the Cornwall leg of our journey so we had 2 rooms both beautiful and we only wished we had stayed longer at Eleven Seaview. The greeting was warm, the rooms were perfect, every small detail you could think of is covered and the view is just beyond discription. We even got up early so we could just sit and look at the view longer. The beds are divine, bathroom stunning and then the breakfast was 6 star at least. Best scrambled eggs of the whole trip. The array of fresh fruit and stewed plums, cereals and breads along with a continental selection were all just perfect. Graham allowed us to leave our car all morning while we enjoyed the streets of St Ives further. He then gave us fantastic advice on what to see and do on our way to Mevagissey our next stop. He also arranged our booking for dinner at the Seafood Cafe and we had the best Mussels of our lives not just the trip. Graham thankyou for your fantastic hospitality and so generously sharing your slice of heaven with us! You are the perfect Host!

“Didn't actually end up staying here but still LOVE the place!”
I wanted to stay at Eleven Sea View Terrace but room availability didn't work out. So how could I love this place? Because my correspondence with Grahame, the owner, was superb---he responded promptly, gave suggestions for other possibilities and was just all around professional, courteous and helpful. I've planned lots of trips for my husband and myself and have sent many, many emails asking about rooms and other issues. The level of response from Grahame was A#1----and I can only imagine for those lucky enough to get a reservation that that level of service and helpfulness continues---augmented by what I'm sure are gracious accomodations. If we ever return to St Ives my first planning email will be to Grahame ---and hopefully this time a room will work out for us!!

“Welcoming, relaxing, luxurious - a superb place to stay.”
This is our second visit to 11 sea view terrace and we cannot recommend it highly enough. The host, Grahame, is very welcoming and friendly and has a great knowledge of the surrounding area. All the rooms are very modern, spottlessly clean and luxurious. You are treated to a fabulous breakfast each morning, with some great choices available. The house is well situated in St Ives, with the town centre only a short walk away, where there are many great shops, bars and resteraunts, all surrounding the harbour and beaches. We would have no problems recommending 11 sea view terrace to anyone, this really is an excellent place to stay.

Dear Sophie Calle,

Over the christmas I along with my partner Tifaine travelled to Paris, the original home to our burgeoning romance. We spent 6 nights together, where we could walk and talk, and swap insufferable glances at each other on the Metro, just as we had done in the summer. We hoped to re-visit the 'Shakespeare and Company' bookshop where we collectively wrote various entries in journals of the time, and wished to return to a vintage photobooth in the Palais De Tokyo, where on rainy August evening we 'clicked' and had our photos taken. I had never been happier.

Despite hints, teases nod and whispers about our long term future as a couple it was only when we arrived in Paris that I made the decision that I wanted to propose to Tifaine. I simply couldn't envisage leaving without having asked her. I dont tend to make life easy for myself. We walked the streets and took in the city for the first couple of days. With every shop we passed I was secretly looking for rings. I found nothing suitable. No problem I thought. I would buy some kitch, a stopgap before buying a ring together. I plasic ring, a haribo sweet, a drinks can. Somehow I never found anything suitable, let along finding a way of taking some time away from her without looking suspicious.

By Wednesday 29th December, I was feeling tense and nervous. All I has to do was find something. Anything to go round Tifaine's finger at the right moment. Yet like a paralysing dream, it proved to tbe the hardest thing to achieve. I became, to some, slightly irrational. I hope that fate would lend a hand. I decided that I might find a lost ring underneth the books shelves and counters of 'Shakespeare and Company' after all I bet the number of meeting, friendships and connection that the shop had seen must have yielded a magic ring. If I found something. I would take it back to the appartment, clean it up and ask the question there and then. Fate provided nothing, but I still feel that there is something there, hidden away. I fel a little more vindicated when, later in London, we were talking about marriage when Tif spotted a four leaf Clover pendent on the pavement in Covent Garden.

Thursday 30th December was going to be the day. For a long time I knew how I was going to propose to her. I wanted us to return to the photobooth at Palaid de Tokyo, put in 2euros and ask the question. Assuming the answer is affirmative, we would enjoy a lasting artifact of that moment. How would the photos look if she said no? Our wicked selves have enjoyed describing the sequence of four photos in blood curdling detail.

I offered to take Tifaine to dinner. In fact I insisted. No 'going Dutch' this time. That afternoon Tof slept on the sofa while I raided the appartment for any ring like object.
I cut off the rings from a ring bound notebook. Too big and too sharp.
A cardbaord ring? Nothing to stick it with.
String? No string.
Panicked and getting disconsolate I found something that had been staring me in the face all the time.

The plastic covered, flexible bands found on foods wrapped up in plastic packaging. In this case a packet of Brioche. Kissing the band, and revelling in a moment of silent, lip-biting triumph whilst dancing on my toes I got to work.

Still Tif slept.

In my Moleskin journal there is a small pocket containing a number of plain white stickers. In the appartment there was a battered old typewritter with half of the component parts wither missing or re-joined in the wrong place. The task was simple. Type a series of letters on one of the stickers, whilst moving the sticker a fraction to the left each time by hand. M a r r y M e ?

I was very happy with the final outcome. A fine piece of craft. Flawed and forgivable. I put it in my trouser pocket.

Tif woke, and after a brief detour, and much needed distraction of Galleries Layfayette, we made our way to the Palais De Tokyo. The plan was to enjoy the 'Fresh Hell' exhibition, then on to the photobooth for the big moment, and then a hopefully victorious meal in the restaurant. That HAD to the be sequence of events.

Walking around the exhibition, my nerves increased. Reaching for my pocket to make sure of the geography of where the ring was housed, my hand grabbed hopelessly. Nothing. I tried again, and again. Every pocket I had was examined thoroughly.

So there I was. In a contemporary art venue. Sweating. Walking behind my partner. Incessently thumbling with my trousers. Looking beyond suspicious.
A security guard moved towards me. Everytime I stopped to look at an exhibit on the wall, he would walk right in front of me, staring.

In a mild state of terror we sat down on some chairs at the end of the exhibition. Tif scribbled in her diary. She later told me that her words were 'What fresh hell is this'. This seemed quite apt for that particualar moment. These were to be her last words before we were engaged.

We walked to the photobooth. I was going to improvise. Those photos would be taken. I was going to ask the question.

Ah. There was a huge queue for the photobooth. Tif said we should have food first. The queue would ease later in the evening. But there was no way this boy would be able to eat anything unless he'd asked the question and recieved the answer.

I stuck to the plan. Still in terror, I muttered something about visiting the gift shop briefly before trying the photobooth again. Tif looked annoyed.
Walking around the shop I looked one last time for something, anything ring like. Nothing. I turned beligerant. I WAS NOT GOING TO LEAVE THIS BUILDING WITHOUT ASKING HER!

In the heat of the moment, instinct took over. I asked Tif if she had a pen on her. I had a post-it note in my pocket. She asked me what I was writing. I said it was noting a couple of artists names I wanted to explore further. But I was in fact drawing a wedding ring (fig 1). This is what I would present to her, rather than any real ring like object.

The queue for the photobooth was still long, but bearable. And somehow once in the queue people realised that they didn't have the right money, or weren't in fact interested, or had something else to do. All of a sudden we were there. Both thumbling, shuffling to get comfortable, both getting in each others way. Tif was somewhat pissed off with me at this point. I didn't even have a coin. Tif paid for the photos! And then once the coins were accepted and the mechanics were set in motion as the photos were taken. I turned to Tif.

'Now, I have had a bit of a stressed out day of it.' (SNAP)
'The reason I wanted to get you into this photobooth is because I have something to ask you.' (SNAP)
'I wanted to give you a ring, but I'll have to make to with this.' I produced the post-it note. (SNAP)
'So Tif, will you marry me?' (SNAP)

I think you can guess the answer. The meal was delicious. The bottle of Rose wine was consumed by both of us in minutes and we laughed at how for this small moment in time, here was a secret known only to the two of us.

In our minds, we guessed that there is a small white stickered food wrapping strip, with the words 'Marry Me' typed haphazardly on it somewhere on the floor of a metro station (possibly Iena). We hoped that you spotted it and picked it up and put it in your pocket.

I hate the idea that a wedding has to cost an average of £20,000. Why would you want to spend a years wages in ONE day???
We don't need to validate our relationship with money, honey!
